USFA Report Cover The complexity of selecting radio systems and equipment for use by police officers and firefighters has dramatically increased over the past ten years. The cost of the technology has skyrocketed and a higher percentage of systems are considered to be failures than ever before. FEMA and the U.S. Fire Administration have recognized this and commissioned a group of experts to publish an outstanding

book entitled “Voice Radio Communications Guide for the Fire Service.” The guide was released in October 2008 and should be a “must read” for every public safety official charged with the responsibility of selecting and maintaining public safety radio communications equipment and systems.

The guide focuses on radio communications for the fire service, however the basic principles presented in the book are equally applicable to the law enforcement community.
